City council has approved closing a portion of Alexander Street in downtown Salmon Arm for special events during the 55+ BC Games.

The closure, from Hudson Avenue to Lakeshore Drive, will begin at noon on Thursday, Sept. 12, and continue to 8 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15.

A stage will be set up on the closed portion of road for live music between from noon to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Council supported a request for the closure received at its regular meeting on April 22. Mayor Alan Harrison called the closure “an opportunity.”

“I can’t remember a time when we’ve closed Alexander for a day and a half or two days, so it’s a good chance to try it out,” said Harrison. “I think what Downtown Salmon Arm, what some of the members would say, is if you’re going to close a street you’ve got to have something happening on it. So that is the case here. It’s not going to be unanimous, there will be some businesses who think it’s not such a good idea. But this is a great opportunity so we’ve all got to get down there and make it work.”
