UPDATE: Man arrested after accessing construction site, climbing crane in Kelowna

UPDATE 7/4 8:30 a.m.

A man has been arrested for breaking and entering and mischief after accessing a construction site and climbing a crane 20 storeys high on Wednesday night.

RCMP shut down the area of Water Street from Harvey Avenue to Bernard Avenue and Leon Avenue to City Park after learning about the incident around 8 p.m.

Along with officers, the Kelowna Fire Department, and multiple emergency services attended the scene. Emergency services, along with the South East District Crisis Negotiator team safely removed the man from the crane around 11:45 p.m.

The suspect was held in custody overnight.

“The RCMP would like to thank the public for staying out of the area at the time of the event.  This allowed our officers and other emergency personnel to focus on the safety of the suspect resulting in a successful resolution” said Kelowna RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Laura Pollock.

UPDATE: 9:35 p.m.

An individual has accessed a construction site on Water Street.

RCMP have blocked off a larger area of downtown Kelowna as police respond to the situation. 

Water Street from Harvey to Bernard Avenue is closed at Leon Avenue which is taped off west to City Park. 

According to those in the area the Emergency Response Team has arrived on scene.

There is currently no risk to the public.

RCMP have shut down a section of downtown Kelowna due to an unfolding police event. 

The public is being asked to stay away from the area between Leon Avenue and Water Street. 

According to Sgt. Laura Pollock, officers have been on the scene since about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

“We are asking for the public to stay away from the area,” said Sgt. Pollock.
